ORAL & MAXILLOFACIAL SURGERY
CENTERS OF EXCELLENCE
The Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Centers of Excellence program, developed in 2023, is the first in the OMS specialty. It was designed to recognize USOSM partner practices that consistently deliver superior patient care and clinical excellence, encourage those same characteristics among other USOSM practices, and spur additional practice growth of existing practices.
The recognized leader in ambulatory health care accreditation is The Accreditation Association for Ambulatory Health Care (AAAHC). They proudly advocate for high-quality health care and patient safety by engaging a wide range of ambulatory health care experts to develop, review, and revise standards, assess organizations against these standards and their own policies and procedures, and create tools to support continuous quality improvement. The AAAHC has accredited more than 6,700 organizations, yet only a fraction of those have been oral and maxillofacial surgery practices.
USOSM practices must apply to and receive approval from the USOSM Centers of Excellence Review Board to participate in the program. Eligibility requirement categories include Business Leadership, Clinical Best Practices, Specialized Support/Training, Clinical Expertise, and strong participation in the OMS community. Each eligibility category has key performance indicators measuring:
- Clinical excellence
- Patient experience
- Standardization/leveraging of best practices and assets
- Financial stability/performance
- Guidance and governance
Meeting the stringent AAAHC requirements is the final step in receiving the Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Centers of Excellence designation. Following AAAHC best practices enables the transfer of AAAHC knowledge into our practice’s day-to-day patient care and ensure practices are adhering to the highest levels of quality.
The first two partner practices that earned the distinction of becoming Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery Centers of Excellence which included receiving AAAHC accreditation are Southwest Virginia Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery and Esmail Oral, Facial, and Dental Implant Surgery.
