J. David Johnson, DDS

Dr. James David Johnson, Jr. earned a B.S. Degree from Rhodes College in 1978 and graduated summa cum laude (with highest honors) from the University of Tennessee College of Dentistry in 1982. He completed his residency in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery at the University of Tennessee Medical Center at Knoxville and became certified by the American Board of Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery (ABOMS) in 1992. He re-certified in 2002 and 2012 and has served as an ABOMS board examiner.

The National Dental Board of Anesthesiology also certifies Dr. Johnson. He is an Associate Professor at the University of Tennessee Graduate School of Medicine. Dr. Johnson has served as Chairman of the American Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons (AAOMS) Committee on Public and Professional Communication and as a member of the AAOMS Faculty Education Development Awards Committee. He is Past President of both the Southeastern Society of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons and the Tennessee Society of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons. Dr. Johnson has been on the AAOMS Board of Trustees for several years, and currently serves as the AAOMS Vice President.

For 15 years, Dr. Johnson served as the national oral and maxillofacial surgery spokesperson for the American Dental Association. He is the recipient of the 2003 AAOMS Presidential Achievement Award, the 2004 Tennessee Dental Association Fellowship Award and was the 2004 Second District Dental Society Dentist of the Year. He is a Fellow of the American College of Dentists and the International College of Dentists.

David lives in Oak Ridge, TN with his wife (Caroline) and their two sons, JD and Thomas. David’s children with his deceased wife (Elizabeth), Andy, Katie and Carolyn respectively live in Chicago, Knoxville and New York.
